I am a certified teacher in the state of Florida, and current Broward County Public School employee. I also currently work and attend school at FAU, and will complete my Master's in Elementary Education Summer 2015. Additionally, I am involved with a preservice teacher education grant through FAU. I have taught elementary previously, and am headed to a middle school reading class next school year, 2015-2016. What is your favorite part of tutoring? My favorite part of tutoring is the opportunity to work one-on-one with a student. As a classroom teacher, it can be challenging to provide individualized attention - tutoring provides that opportunity! Can you describe your greatest success as a tutor? Student success is the greatest reward for a teacher and a tutor. The moment that information is exchanged, in a way that a student understands and is then followed by the student taking the new information, and developing the ability to apply what they have learned is an incredibly process to be a part of. How do you assess a student's learning style? Students learn in many different ways. As a tutor and teacher it is essential to discover the student's learning style (visual, audio, tactile, etc.) and then in turn cater to those needs and abilities. What are some examples of special methods or techniques you use when tutoring? When both teaching and tutoring I believe it is paramount to follow a student centered design. Inquiry learning, where instruction is student led, allows a student to take ownership and pride in their education. Also important is the ability of a tutor to assess a student, in order to provide instruction that meets an individual students academic needs at their instructional level.
